Do you know, and like, John Sandford's Prey series? I do, and his Virgil Flowers series even more. Throughout the Upper Mid-West, our protagonist is known by all as "that f***ing Flowers." But do not be misled. Flowers is smart, tenacious, charismatic, and wonderfully effective. He is a tough cop who looks like a hippie; he is (not surprisingly) liked and respected by men, and very attractive to women. Heat Lightning, written more than a decade ago, is so good that I recently re-read it (something I never do with thrillers), and it was only months later - when I gave it to one of my sons, who also loved it - that I realized I had read it about 13 years ago. The novel covers some real, but sad, American history, and a surprisingly attractive and seductive villain, Mai, who never disappoints. There is mystery, violence, some romance, and a whole lot of reading fun. If you know Virgil Flowers, it is like getting together with a relative or old friend whom you really like, but, if you do not yet know him... what are you waiting for?
