This book is totally compelling and draws you in until you cannot put it down. It begins in 1911 with the courtship of Madeline Force and John Jacob Astor ("Jack") the richest man in the world. Madeline is a debutante, age 17, when they meet and he is an ultra-wealthy businessman, newly divorced, and twice her age. But when they are introduced, and their eyes meet, they connect and their courtship begins. Madeline and Jack are driven crazy by the press and Jack says to Madeline, "I fear you will know no peace with me." Madeline's reply was, "Peace, what a tedious notion. Who recognizes peace when you may have Colonel Jack Astor" and the romance begins. When Madeline turns 18, they are married and a short time later, she becomes pregnant. The excessive gossip leads them to an extended honeymoon to Europe and then a trip home on the Titanic. She survives the sinking of the Titanic (women and children first), but Jack Astor does not. The Second Mrs. Astor is a memorable read. It's a 10!
