Publishers Weekly said that The Four Winds was "the bestselling hardcover novel of the year." This is a hard book to read but you will learn what true grit is and the power to go on. This is an educational masterpiece and since most of us did not grow up in the Depression, we learn to appreciate all the hard times they lived in, and they were hard! Set in 1934 and the dust storms of the Great Plains, it is the story of Elsa and her daughter Loreda and her son Ant. Her husband left her and the kids shortly after hard times hit and she was reduced to living in a camp. Living in a camp was hard work, tents, no running water, no electricity, the lack of food, and the way they were forced to live will get your attention. Throughout the book, you will also learn how people helped each other. I especially enjoyed their Christmas and how people came together to make it special. A real lesson in humanity--if you only read one book this year--make it this one!
